Haitians have a special taste for decoration and bright colors. Haitian painting became popular in the 1940s when a school of primitive artists encouraged by the Episcopal Church began in Port-au-Prince. Since that time a steady flow of talented painters has emerged from the lower middle class.

Important historic moments, sceneries from the long rebellion against colonization and slavery and culminating with independence in 1804 and incredible suffering are usually portrayed. The landscape of the country and the everyday life of its people are also important components of the Haitian paintings.
Haitian sculptors as well as other artists use wood, soapstone, and scrap metal from recycled oil drums and other available materials. Haitian wood carvers coax graceful forms from native wood. Haiti recycles old metal oil drums and transforms them into everything from landscapes to mythological sea creatures. Haitian Metal Art originated in the early 1950s by a blacksmith named Georges Liautaud. This art form uses recycled oil drums. The artists use hammers and assorted chisels to cut and bend the metal into artwork.
